About us
Our History
Alumni of the University of Colombo resident in Melbourne Victoria have been interacting informally for a number of years. In June 2008, graduates and former staff members met and decided to initiate further activities to benefit them as a group.
As a first step, a volunteer committee consisting of Dayanthi Nugegoda, Gamini Perera, Kapila De Silva, Keerthi Pothuwila, Lakshman Welivitiya, Mahesha Peiris, Priyantha Gunaratne, Ramyani Abeywickrema, Ranjan Jayalath, Saman Sandanayake, Sanjaya Fernando, Senake Perera, Sobitha Buthgamuwa and Ursula Manuelpillai was tasked with organising an event to bring the alumni together.
A successful family dinner dance was held at the Springvale Town Hall in October 2008, attracting a large and diverse group of University of Colombo graduates and staff. Based on the interest and feedback from the participants, further steps were taken to formally launch an Alumni Association.
A general meeting with co-conveners Kapila De Silva, Senake Perera and Anil Abeywickrema was held in Melbourne on the 19th of September 2009 at which the Colombo University Alumni Association of Victoria (CUAAV) was formally inaugurated. It is now an incorporated body in the Australian State of Victoria, and is subject to the corresponding accountability guidelines.
