‘From Colombo and Belfast to the World: How the Blood Electrolyte Analyzer Happened’
Saturday, 14th July 2018, 2:00-3:30pm
Conference Room, The Grand on Princes, 2251 Princes Hwy, Mulgrave VIC 3170
Professor De Silva is a proud product of University of Colombo, a percussionist who works at the Queen’s University of Belfast, Northern Ireland. With his co-workers, he had the chance to introduce molecular logic as an experimental field and to establish the generality of the luminescent PET (photo-induced electron transfer) sensor/switch principle. He contributed to the chemistry module of the market-leading OPTI® point-of-care blood gas/electrolyte analyzer currently sold by Optimedical Inc. The sales of the chemistry module have been about 100 M USD so far. He won the Royal Society of Chemistry Sensors award in 2008 and the first international award for Molecular Sensors and Molecular Logic Gates in 2012. He was elected to the Royal Irish Academy in 2002. He wrote the book Molecular Logic-based Computation, Royal Society of Chemistry, Cambridge, 2013.
